mother and father reminisce about Hong Kong & we don’t talk about patrick (2024)

For Fireworks at China Heights Gallery, Sydney. Curated by Con Gerakaris.

mother and father reminisce about Hong Kong and we don’t talk about patrick are a pair of works that utilise strategies of refusal and trickery as a method of disruption in the white imagination.

mother and father reminisce about Hong Kong is a video work where I document myself cleaning old photo slides I found in my father’s collection. The audio features my mother and father having a conversation. Its descriptive title situates the work in the long line of stories of political strife that artists of colour and diaspora can find themselves pigeonholed to tell. Installed behind a thick acrylic sheet, a clear image is obfuscated. Only those who can speak Cantonese will know the audio’s content.

we don’t talk about patrick is a framed slide that was cleaned during the making of ‘mother and father reminisce about Hong Kong’.
